The Plymouth Antiquarian Society is pleased to participate in First Fridays Plymouth. On the First Friday of every month (May – October), many of the the artists, galleries, shops, museums and showrooms of the Plymouth Bay Cultural District open their doors to the public for an evening of art, culture and inspiration.
On this First Friday, PAS will open the Hedge House Museum for free mini-tours from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. View a pop-up exhibit of common, everyday clothing (primarily from the 1800s) – pieces that are actually quite rare in museum collections – from a recent Historic Clothing Parlor Talk – “Dressed for Daily Life”. Pieces include examples of day dresses, dressing gowns (male and female), a “Mother Hubbard” dress, a laborers (or farmers) smock, a duster, a frock coat, etc. Also on display is a 1770s homespun apron. While it won’t be the deep dive that our Parlor Talk guests experienced, it is a last opportunity to see and learn a little about these wonderful pieces before they return to storage and we prepare for our next exhibit.
You’ll also explore one of Plymouth’s finest examples of Federal period architecture, featuring octagonal rooms in the main block and a rare intact carriage house. Period rooms reveal the richness of 19th-century social and domestic life, with faithfully reproduced wallpaper and carpeting, China Trade treasures, American furnishings, paintings, textiles, and toys on display. The Rose T. Briggs Memorial Garden features brick pathways and flowering perennials.
