Burial Hill Tour: James Thacher’s War

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN DATE: This tour, originally scheduled for July 5, has been postponed to Sunday, July 13 at 1 p.m.

Dr. James Thacher enlisted as a 21-year-old surgeon’s mate in the Continental Army in 1775 and served through the duration of the American Revolution, witnessing many of the war’s pivotal events. Afterwards he retired to Plymouth and published an account of his experiences, A Military Journal during the American Revolutionary War, published in 1823 when Thacher was 69 years old. Learn about this remarkable South Shore Patriot and the war that forged a new nation and indelibly shaped Thacher’s rising generation.

About the Series

The Burial Hill tour program was originally launched in 2011 by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, in collaboration with Pilgrim Hall Museum. The two organizations began co-presenting the series in 2016. Tours are offered at the ancient burying ground at 1 pm on the first Saturday of each month from February through December. In honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, this year’s series, “Revolutionary Connections,” focuses on Plymouth’s role in America’s struggle for independence. Each tour delves into Revolutionary-era themes, uncovering South Shore connections to the fight for freedom. Led by local historians and authors, these engaging programs explore history, art, and culture atop Burial Hill, a unique open-air museum in the heart of downtown Plymouth.
