7:00 pm: “Frederick N. Knapp and Aid to Stranded Union Soldiers,” a talk by Dr. Patrick Browne, PAS Executive Director
Patrick will discuss his research on Frederick Newman Knapp, who became pastor of Plymouth’s First Parish Church after the Civil War. During the war, Knapp established the Special Relief Department of the Sanitary Commission to deal with a humanitarian crisis in and around Washington. Intent on relieving suffering wherever he found it, Knapp and his department stepped in and accomplished inspiring work in aiding stranded, sick, and wounded veterans, doing all in his power to get them home. Today PAS holds numerous Knapp family artifacts—including his four-post bed in the Hedge master bedchamber.
