Plymouth Foodways

Join the group at the very top of Burial Hill to learn about Plymouth’s baking traditions with Paula Marcoux, food historian and author of Cooking with Fire. In this one-hour tour, Paula will introduce you to commercial and home bakers who worked in Plymouth over the course of three centuries, and some of the local favorites produced by them. Along the way, she’ll discuss the technologies and ingredients that shaped local tastes, and the labor involved in producing baked goods to keep a family or village running. Special emphasis will be placed on Plymouth’s notion of cake.

About the Series

The Burial Hill tour program was originally launched in 2011 by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, in collaboration with Pilgrim Hall Museum. The two organizations began co-presenting the series in 2016. In 2024 themed history tours will be offered at the ancient burying ground at 1 pm on the first Saturday of each month from February through December. This popular series features local historians who share their expertise on a fascinating range of topics, highlighting art, history, and culture in the open-air museum at the heart of downtown Plymouth. Tours begin at the top of the Hill and last approximately one hour. For the full schedule, click here.
